Diatomaceous Earth is a highly absorbent material, and it is this feature which makes it a very effective control agent, on those insects whch have a waxy, or moist outer skeleton. It absorbs the body fluids over a few days, destroying the insect by drying it out. Some of the insects affected are: slugs, ants, red spider mite, Colorado potato beetle, ear wig. To protect against flying insects, apply to plant foliage both top and underneath if possible, and on the ground in a ribbon strip around plants, to protect against crawling insects. When diatomaceous earth becomes wet, due to rain or dew, it loses its effectiveness. It must be dry. Diatomaceous Earth is not harmful to pets, and may be added to animal feed at 2% of the daily feed ration to help control internal parasites. It is an effective physical, as opposed to a chemical action, to help control insects and parasites.
When DE is added to animal feed on a regular basis, DE helps control internal parasites, thus improving animal health.
